Tom Allen hosts Shift on CBC Radio 2 and concerts across Canada. He is the author of three non-fiction books, plays the trombone when he can and wrote this show, among many others. Mostly, he’s a storyteller.

The Judgment of Paris is part of a series of chamber musicals bullied into existence by Tom Allen with the people you see before you today. The idea is to reflect the history and mythology of the great composers through their music and stories alongside newly created songs that reflect those same composers’ experiences in a modern context.

The first of these productions was Bohemians in Brooklyn, created in 2012 and recorded in early months of 2013. Bohemians tells the story of the brownstone in wartime Brooklyn that once housed WH Auden, Carson McCullers, Benjamin Britten and Gypsy Rose Lee. It was commissioned in 2012 by the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival and Music Niagara, with support from SoulPepper Theatre and the Young Centre for the Performing Arts. It was featured in the 2012 Global Cabaret Festival, at which time Now magazine said it was “beautifully punctuated” and that it “brought the songs to vivid life.”

The Judgment of Paris was commissioned by the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival and Music Niagara, with support from SoulPepper Theatre. Special thanks to Christopher Newton for direction and input and to Ken MacKenzie of SoulPepper for set design.
